GASABO 3D joins hands with notable entrepreneur to develop award winning mobile solar charging kiosk

Gasabo 3D in close collaboration with an energy services firm known as ARED has developed a mobile solar charging kiosk that has scooped a prestigious international award on innovation.

The mobile charger kiosk is meant to bridge access to ICT services in rural areas through provision of mobile phone charging units in areas without access to main grid electric power. Gasabo 3D developed the design of final prototype that is currently under testing.

“The mobile solar cell phone charger is a mobile charging point, which can be attached to bicycles and other mobile units. It offers a micro solution to quickly charge cell phones for people on the go, using renewable energy technology”, John Rugamba CEO Gasabo 3D says.

Rugamba adds that; “The charging system has two retractable solar panels with 40 watts each at the top, a lock system to keep the cell phone system and the solar panels secured at night, as well as, a lithium battery to store electricity for night charging”.

Rugamba further explains that a manual charging mechanism can be used when the device is on a stationary position and in the case of bad weather. Since the whole system is on wheels, it can go where the customers are or where they gather, such as at market places, churches or bus stops. The whole unit is fitted onto a plastic body, which can also offer space for advertisement.

Impact on the Society

The mobile charger’s potential impact on society is huge, according to the technicians who worked on the prototype. “The proposed mobile charger kiosk allows people with limited access to electricity to solve their phone charging needs without having to walk long distances in order to charge their phones”, Emmanuel Hategikimana the lead product development engineer for the prototype revealed.

Hategikimana added that “the kiosk once commercialized in the near future will be deployed using a franchise system nationally with a potential of scale up in other countries in Africa thereby creating source of income for people in the rural areas”.
